The first examination of a pediatric patient begins with communicating with both the child and the child’s parents. After the introduction, the patient’s medical and dental history is taken. Then, clinical and radiographic examination begins. After these stages, the patient and the relevant family member are informed about the diagnosis and treatment planning. Doctors apply many methods to protect especially milk factor and permanent teeth from major oral diseases such as caries and periodontal diseases
These include teaching the child and parents about proper dental care from a competent person (tell-show-do), observing and eliminating certain discomforts (e.g. gum irritation, tartar) at regular intervals. Treatment of children without scaring them with techniques such as fissure sealants and interventions (e.g. mini fillings) to ensure that the primary teeth fulfill their duties until the underlying teeth emerge are also among the points that should be taken into consideration in pediatric dentistry.
Another but not leatst important benefit of children coming to the dentist for examination at an early age is the early diagnosis of serious disorders in tooth and/or jaw development, biting / closing, and the elimination of the problem with almost painless orthodontic methods such as wire / plate treatment /mitigation during development, instead of long orthodontic treatments or even jaw surgery at later ages.
